Face a broad source of soft light
Start near a window that is out of direct sunlight, with your face turned toward it. A small bright light to one side can leave the other side of the face dark. Overhead light can create shadows under the eyes and chin.
Take a trial frame and compare the light on both cheeks and around the eyes. If one side is dark or the forehead has lost visible detail, change your position before taking more photos.
Separate yourself from the background
Leave space between your head and the wall. If a dark outline appears behind you, move farther forward and take another trial frame. Check that the background still fills the area around your head and shoulders.
Use a plain surface in the color your document requires. Curtains, textured walls and door panels can remain visible in the photo even when they look unobtrusive in the room.
Avoid mixed colors of light
A warm room lamp and cool daylight can illuminate opposite sides of the face differently. Start with one consistent source of light and turn off colored accent lights.
Review the photograph for an obvious color cast and uneven brightness. If the skin looks unnaturally orange, blue or washed out, adjust the physical setup and take another frame. A filter is not a reliable correction for a document photograph.
Check the original before using a background tool
Inspect the face separately from the wall behind it. Replacing a background will not resolve blur, glare or a shadow across the face.
Merodim recommends a suitable original background. Where digital replacement is offered, check the disclosure against your document’s editing rules. US passport guidance requires an unedited photograph, so improving the real setup is the recommended approach.
