Check age before measuring the head
Netherlands Worldwide gives different head-height ranges for older and younger applicants. The face-width requirement is separate. A familiar 35 × 45 mm passport crop from another country does not establish that these measurements match.
Keep the photo recent and unaltered
The guidance requires a colour likeness no more than six months old, without software alteration. The background must be plain and uniform with sufficient contrast. Follow the illustrated examples for pose, expression and glasses.
Ask the printer about the finished output
Merodim tip: tell the printer this is a Dutch identity-card photo and provide the official specification. Measure the finished copy before the appointment, rather than judging its size on a phone screen.
Problems and practical fixes.
Use the issue you can see to choose your next step.
- A UK print crop is reused
- Compare the head measurements instead of relying on the matching outer size.
- The face blends into the background
- Adjust the physical setup so the outline remains distinct. A pale background alone does not guarantee useful contrast.
- The print loses fine detail
- Check both the source resolution and printer settings. Increasing a DPI label cannot restore missing image detail.
Check the instructions for your application.
