Find the glasses rule before taking the photo
For a US passport, glasses normally need to come off. A medical exception requires a signed doctor’s note. New Zealand permits prescription glasses that are not tinted or thick-framed, provided the eyes remain visible without reflections. Removing glare alone therefore does not answer whether glasses are allowed.
Open the photo instructions for the country and application route you are using. Do not rely on the example in an old passport or the fact that glasses were accepted for another document. A familiar pair of everyday glasses may still be outside the rule for the current photograph.
Prescription use is not the same as an exception
If you can safely and comfortably remove your glasses for the picture, put them aside before the trial shot. Ask the helper to show you where the lens is while you are still wearing them, then keep looking at that point after removing them.
If removal is not possible for medical reasons, read the authority’s exception process before booking or uploading. Ask what supporting information it needs. Do not make a medical decision for the sake of the photograph, and do not assume a shop’s assurance replaces the authority’s documentation requirements.
Where glasses are allowed, inspect both eyes
A reflection can cover one eye while leaving the other clear. Check each lens at a larger viewing size and look for bright windows, small light points and a dark frame crossing the pupil. Moving the light source or the photographer slightly may change the reflection without changing your normal posture.
Keep your face directed toward the camera. Tilting your chin or turning your head just to hide glare can introduce a different problem. Take several trial frames while adjusting the setup, then choose the one with the clearest view of your eyes that still meets the required pose.
Do not erase the glasses afterward
Removing frames or reflections digitally can invent detail around the eyes. Those are precisely the features the photograph needs to record accurately. If glasses were not allowed, the straightforward remedy is another photograph with them removed, subject to any medical exception.
Keep the original frame alongside the submitted version. When reviewing a prepared image, pay particular attention to the eyes rather than judging only the overall white background or crop. A clean-looking result is not enough if the capture did not follow the glasses rule.
