Convert only if your application needs it
A HEIC file is not automatically a poor photograph. It is a file format, and the first question is whether the receiving service supports it. Singapore ICA currently lists HEIC among its accepted online photo formats, while other applications may ask specifically for JPEG.
Check the upload instructions and the error message before converting. If the problem is a wrong pixel size or an oversized file, changing the extension alone will not fix it. Make a note of every required property so you can prepare one suitable output.
Use an export rather than renaming the file
Changing a name from photo.heic to photo.jpg does not change the image format inside the file. Use an image application’s export or conversion function. Keep the HEIC original and save the JPEG as a separate copy so that you can return to the source if you choose the wrong settings.
On a Mac, Apple documents opening an HEIF image in Photos or Preview and using File, then Export, to select JPEG. Menus may vary between software versions. Choose the required output format explicitly and inspect the saved result rather than relying only on the new filename.
Check that the conversion preserved the photograph
Open the exported JPEG in a normal image viewer. Compare the orientation, crop and color with the source. Inspect the eyes and hair for a noticeable loss of detail. If the export dialog offered a quality setting, avoid choosing the smallest possible file without first seeing what it does to the image.
Conversion should not be an excuse to add a beauty filter or replace facial detail. Keep the original appearance and make only the file preparation allowed by your application. A compatible JPEG can still be unsuitable if the underlying photo breaks the capture or editing rules.
Upload the saved file, not a screenshot of it
Use the file picker to select the actual exported image. A screenshot of the preview produces another image with the screen’s dimensions and may include a different crop or interface elements. It also makes the conversion harder to trace if an upload fails.
Confirm the extension, pixel dimensions and file size on the exported copy. Give it a clear name that distinguishes it from the original and any print sheet. Then review the portal’s displayed preview to ensure the right image was selected.
