Send an attachment rather than a picture of the picture
Start with the saved image file. A screenshot records what your screen displays, which may be smaller than the original and can include interface elements or a different crop. Photographing another screen or a printed photo introduces more problems.
Use a transfer method that sends the file itself. Depending on your devices, that could be a direct file transfer, an email attachment or a download from storage you control. Check any option that offers a reduced image size before sending.
Watch for automatic resizing
Messaging apps and sharing menus may optimize photographs for quick viewing. The result can look acceptable in the conversation while containing fewer pixels than the source. US online passport-renewal guidance specifically warns about quality loss from sending a photo by text message.
If a service offers an original-file or document attachment mode, check the received result rather than assuming the label guarantees an identical copy. Save the attachment locally and open that version before using it in an application.
Compare the source and received files
Check the filename, format, pixel width and height on both devices. A large unexpected drop in dimensions suggests that a smaller copy was transferred. A change in byte size alone is less conclusive, because conversion can alter the storage size without changing the dimensions.
Inspect the eyes, hair and facial edges at a useful viewing size. If detail is noticeably softer, return to the source and choose a different transfer method. Do not sharpen a poor copy to compensate for losing the original.
Convert only if the receiving system needs it
A phone image may arrive as HEIC while an application accepts JPEG. Convert from the best available source using an export function, then check the result against the upload limits. Renaming the extension does not change the format.
Keep the camera file even after creating a compatible copy. Share only the portrait or print file needed, not unrelated identity documents. When someone else is submitting on your behalf, ask them to confirm the actual attachment before completing the form.
