Check who supplies the photograph

Before arranging a new photo, find the instructions for your license, issuing state and application type. A first application may work differently from a renewal, and an occupational license may use a different process from a driver’s license.

The photo may come from you, an appointment or an image the state already holds. Finding this out first can save you buying a photograph the agency cannot use.

Massachusetts hoisting licenses offer two options

The Massachusetts hoisting engineer application lists an RMV-photo authorization option and an option to supply a 2 × 2 inch photograph that meets its guidance. Follow the current form’s instructions for the option you choose.

If you supply the photo yourself, check how to attach it to the online or mailed application. The physical dimensions alone do not tell you the required upload format. Other Massachusetts licenses can have their own instructions.

New York security guard cards use the DMV image

New York’s Department of State says a personal photograph cannot replace the DMV image for a security guard application. Applicants without a current New York photo driver license or non-driver ID need an image-only transaction at a DMV office.

The state’s FAQ explains the form to bring and the receipt to keep. A new portrait prepared elsewhere will not substitute for that process.

What to confirm on your own application

Use the agency’s application page and the form together. If one asks for a photo and the other describes a photo authorization, check whether they are alternatives before preparing either.

• The exact license class and whether you are applying for the first time or renewing.
• Whether you supply a photo, authorize an existing image or attend a photo appointment.
• The photo’s permitted age, background and any editing restrictions.
• The upload specifications or, for prints, the dimensions, paper and number of copies.
